Engine, Transmission, and Performance
A 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine is standard and makes 182 horsepower. Sport, Limited XT, and Touring XT models come with a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter engine. All Legacy models have all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). We’ve tested both engines now, and what a difference a turbo makes. The Touring XT managed to hit 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds while the non-turbo Sport required a lackluster 8.0 seconds. Regardless of which engine is under the hood, the new Legacy boasts slightly improved handling dynamics over the last generation and a similarly compliant ride.

Safety features only get a car so far. Structural integrity plays a vital role in protecting a vehicle’s occupants during an accident. That’s why it’s crucial to see how a model performs in crash tests conducted by reputable organizations.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2020 Subaru Legacy a Top Safety Pick +. Notably, the 2021 model hasn’t been tested at the time of this writing. The 2020 model only received an ‘average’ rating for its standard headlights, but its optional adaptive headlights earned a ‘good’ rating. Now that this equipment is standard, the 2021 Subaru Legacy should perform even better than its predecessor.
Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2020 Subaru Legacy a five-star overall safety rating. The midsize sedan earned perfect marks in the frontal crash, side crash, and rollover categories. However, the NHTSA issued one recall for the 2020 Subaru.
The two safety rating systems you need to knowThe two most important ratings of any vehicle’s safety come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). These two bodies, a federal agency and a non-profit organization respectively, conduct tests to evaluate the safety of motor vehicles in the U.S. NHTSA ratings are based on a five-star system that’s been in place since 1993. Each vehicle gets an overall score, but NHTSA also breaks down individual ratings for the three major tests:
Which Subaru has the highest safety ratings?Which Subaru is safest in a crash? It’s a tie between the Ascent SUV and the Legacy sedan, both of which earned five-star overall ratings from the NHTSA and were named as Top Safety Pick+ choices by IIHS. NHTSA crash tests revealed one minor weakness for each vehicle: for the Ascent, it’s a 17% rollover risk that drops its rollover score to four stars, while the Legacy loses a single star for front passenger-side crash tests. The 2019 Subaru Legacy also has you covered if an accident does occur. The STARLINK™ Safety Plus system sends and Automatic Collision Notification and can provide you with either Enhanced Roadside Assistance or SOS Emergency Assistance.
This system is also watching out for you before you even get in your car. You can receive Diagnostic Alerts and a Monthly Vehicle Health Report, so that you’ll know ahead of time if your vehicle has any problems or needs maintenance.

Subaru’s standard warranty package is basic but matches what most rivals in this class offer. The Hyundai Sonata and the Kia K5 both provide longer warranty terms, and the Camry comes with two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
