You can find these apps by doing a broad search for a station (e.g. NBC), or by searching for a station using its call sign. For example, the local NBC station in Boston is NBC10 Boston. Most of these apps have local newscasts, weather reports and sports coverage.

The Local Now app also carries several state and regional news stations.

A lot of new smart TVs let you get free basic cable TV with little effort. They work well with digital HD antennas. Installation is as simple as a few clicks.

You can also access most streaming platforms directly from your TV.

If your TV does not provide access to the necessary apps, it likely has an HDMI port. You simply plug a device in the port to access a plethora of content.

Option 4: Try Freebie Services Such as Amazon News and NewsON

If it’s local news you’re after, you may be able to get by with some of the programming from emerging free streaming services.

Amazon News is the latest of these to offer free news updates from local channels in 158 U.S. markets.

To access this feature, you’ll need the Amazon News app that is located on the Fire TV streaming devices.

Once you’re on the app, you’ll be able to choose from a menu of local channel newsfeeds. Typically, you’re offered the channels that are closest to your location.

In my case, I was able to get news and weather from my local CBS affiliate for free.

If you’re unable to access Amazon News on your device, there is a similarly interesting option called NewsON that touts access to more than 275 local news sources across the country.

Watching Local Channels on Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku

If you are using a Roku or Amazon Fire TV, there are a few different ways you can watch free local channels using a TV antenna. 

With a Roku TV, you can simply plug your TV antenna into the coaxial port in the back of the television and scan for channels. Roku TVs have a built in channel guide that services free over-the-air channels and free streaming channels offered by Roku.

Otherwise, you can use a HDHomeRun DVR or a Tablo to stream free over-the-air channels through their respective apps on Roku and Fire TV. 

Option 2: Subscribe to a Live TV Streaming Service

If you’re cutting the cord from traditional cable but still want to watch most of your favorite TV channels, you’re likely considering a live TV streaming service.

Many — but not all — of these services offer at least some of your local channels with your subscription.

YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV both tout access to some local channels included with their subscriptions, but the cost may be prohibitive for some. YouTube TV starts at $65 per month and Hulu + Live TV is now $70 per month.

This isn’t the cheapest solution, but it may end up being the most effective for you.

I searched my ZIP code on YouTube TV’s site and found that it carries my local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS channels and more.

But not all live TV streaming services will be this thorough.

Sling TV, which is a popular live TV streaming choice because of its $35 monthly fee, offers access only to NBC and FOX affiliates in select markets.

And value service Philo, which offers more than 60 channels for just $25, does not carry local channels at all.

Other Alternatives to Cable TV

Aside from the easy-to-access sites above and apps you can explore for free cable TV, there are other ways of watching cable TV shows without shelling out money.

For example, you may be surprised to discover that you could get basic cable by plugging a coax cable into the wall of your rented apartment complex. You won’t have much control over accessing channels in an app or upgrading to HD.

If you’re shopping around for an internet service provider, many of them have packages that include cable TV. Compare packages from different companies before picking the provider. This is important since you’d likely be stuck with a contract for up to 24 months.

There are many amazing shows in recent years, so I hope you’d be able to binge-watch them like the rest of us.
